Heroin addict Jack
Daw recounts his story to fellow addict Mikey. Jack is a loser. He
was given an attaché by Graves in the usual way, although Graves is not
seen in the story. In the hours that followed, he lost his job doing
security in a night club. Holding down jobs is not something Jack excels
at. He then got a glass in the face during a bar fight before rolling
round to his ex-girlfriend Cheryl's apartment. With Jack drunk, they
discussed their relationship. As Cheryl bared her soul, Jack passed out.
The next morning Jack was woken by Cheryl's new man, who obviously has a
deep loathing for Jack.
Having scored a
supply of drugs for breakfast, Jack went to visit his brother and mother,
who run a fishery down by the docks. Although Jack's brother has little
time for him, his mother will always love him it seems. We learn that
Jack's father committed suicide and that perhaps Jack was planning to do
the same. He didn't, at least not then.
Having acquired
money from his mother, we return to the present as Jack finishes his
story. Mikey tells Jack his story is lame, and doesn't go anywhere. How
can a story about a gun and 100 bullets be so dull? He berates Jack about
his life and how he lives, complaining of the smell in the derelict
building Jack lives in. When Mikey goes to see if there is a dead animal
in the cellar he discovers the rotting corpses of other addicts and
derelicts at the bottom of the stairs.
Jack stands behind
him, gun at the ready. "The old man gave me...a hundred untraceable
bullets. So I figure, I really only gotta save one..." As
Mikey yells in fear, we see the photograph from Graves' attaché. It's of
Jack himself.
