Hank Kowalski is a
degenerate Atlantic City gambler with a sick wife. Hank gambles
everything he has in a game with Benito Medici. Benito forces Hank
out of the game, even though Hank sees that he would have won the hand,
had the bank offered him credit. Benito
is in town for a summit meeting of the Trust, back at 'the scene of the
crime'. One by one, the main players in the story arrive. Daniel Peres
leads another family. He talks with Benito about Shepherd and the need to
eliminate the Minutemen. As
Benito gambles, Hank tries to find out more about him. He gets the
information he needs from Cole Burns. Hank's
wife ends up in hospital. He can't afford the treatment she needs and is
unlikely to be offered enough through public aid funding. Graves
meets with Cole Burns and they plot to strike at the Trust. They discuss
Shepherd "up on his tightrope", if he falls it seems he has
"a net". This poses questions that are yet to be answered.
Graves and Cole toast the Minutemen "Past, present...and
future." On
the beach, Shepherd meets with Benito, and Benito meets Dizzy. In town,
Hank buys a gun. Finally
we meet The Trust, and see the mistrust between them. Augustus lays out
his plans for the Trust, the future and the Minutemen, and explains why
things are like they are. Peres
is paged away, seemingly on business. Megan is ordered to accompany him,
but soon ends up with Benito in his room, looking down the wrong end of
Hank's gun. Peres
meets with Graves on the waterfront as Benito bargains with Hank. Hank
uses Megan as a hostage, which Benito seems happy with. Cole arrives on
the waterfront carrying two hot dogs. He sits beside Peres. Daniel asks if
there is a message for Augustus. Benito
offers Hank a choice, the twelve thousand he lost, or a $100,000 dollar
bet on a Sixers v. Lakers game. Hank favours the Sixers, and takes the
bet. Benito, knowing Hank's luck and the Sixers' injury list, has backed
the Lakers. On
the waterfront, Graves message to Augustus is clear. Peres slumps dead on
the bench, with Cole Burns' knife sticking out of him. Comments
