Night
of the Payday
Issue 40
Shepherd gives Lono
a mission. A man in Raliegh, North Carolina, could pose a problem for the
Trust. He is to be taken out before this becomes the case. Lono accepts
the task.
They meet a week
later in Pittsburgh. Graves is once again the topic of conversation.
Shepherd pays Lono for the job in $1000 bills and warns him that there is
a war coming. Lono tells Shepherd to shove his war. Graves tried to kill
him, and he will be sorry for that. Shepherd says that there are other
plans for Lono. Lono needs to pick a side or one will be picked for him.
Back at his hotel,
Lono exhibits his wonderful personality traits for the owner before
retiring to his room. He is with Echo Memoria. She is far from happy with
life in Pittsburgh. Lono gives her several of the bills, sending her off
to cheer herself up, before retiring himself to the bar. It is here that
the other plans mentioned earlier become apparent. Lono has been drinking
for some time, when the hotel fills with cops. Echo has been picked up at
the airport trying to flee the country. The money she used for the ticket
was from a recent bank robbery. Shepherd had set them up, and now Echo had
ratted on Lono. He decides to shoot his way out, but is gunned down in the
hotel doorway.
