Dizzy is sent to
Paris to meet up with Mr. Branch, an ex-journalist who was once given the
attaché case by Graves. Mr. Shepherd feels Dizzy and Branch will have a
lot in common.
Branch turns out to be a complete lowlife, but does have
some interesting stories to tell. Much is suggested about the
various characters' relationships. Dizzy apparently demonstrates marshal arts techniques, although she is
unaware of how she knows this. Branch tells his own story about his encounter with Graves and
the secret society for whom Graves worked. He
describes the Trust as the "Original original gangsters" a
society of thirteen families dating back to ancient history.
Whilst investigating
Graves, Branch uncovered the Trust. For his
troubles he received a visit from Lono, who broke his fingers one by one,
telling him to drop his enquiries. Branch went to the hospital to get his
fingers fixed but whilst waiting, Mr. Shepherd arrived and offered to
reveal more about the Trust and the Minutemen to Branch.
Branch shares this
information with Dizzy, but is aware that they are being followed. Branch
panics when Cole Burns appears from the shadows, shouting at Dizzy to
shoot him. Threats are exchanged, Cole leaves and Branch offers Dizzy a
warning, "Tell Mr. Shepherd...you belong to Graves."
